Dear Reader,
If you’ve found yourself in a situation where you are unable to exclusively breastfeed and/or breastfeed for as long as you wanted to, for whatever reason, I hope this letter encourages you. Whether you’re pregnant sooner than you anticipated and need to supplement for a young baby, or you’re dealing with a medical condition that makes it difficult to have a full milk supply (like Insufficient Glandular Tissue, hormonal conditions, or prior breast surgery), an unexpected occurrence is probably not something you planned for. Some parents wonder if they can still come to LLL meetings in such a case–of course you can! La Leche League Groups are here to support you with both emotional support and practical tips, no matter what your feeding journey looks like. You are welcome here, always.
First, let us affirm that you are a breastfeeder, no matter how much milk you give your baby. Your worth as a mother or nursing parent is not measured in ounces. If you’re not able to exclusively breastfeed or provide human milk, you may be wondering if it is worth breastfeeding at all. Perhaps you’re considering whether life would be simpler if you just move totally to bottles and supplement your baby rather than breastfeeding any amount. No doubt, people around you will offer many opinions on your feeding choices and feeding journey and might discourage you. If you desire to continue breastfeeding, even in a reduced capacity, hopefully this information will help you feel empowered with potential changes in your perspective and practical strategies.
Feeding your baby is the primary goal. Ensure that your baby gets sufficient nutrition first! Donor breastmilk and milk-sharing are possible options. Please consult your pediatrician on what is best and safest in your individual circumstances for keeping your baby’s tummy full.
Next, if you desire to continue nursing, it may be helpful to realign your goals and think about your favorite parts of breastfeeding and explore ways you can maintain those aspects. For example, if you love nursing your child to sleep, you could consider bottle-feeding at the beginning and then bringing your baby to comfort nurse at the breast. The pressure is lessened as far as the volume of breastmilk your baby needs, and you can focus on bonding and snuggling. This nonnutritive suckling stimulates your milk supply, and the baby will still get some milk while suckling.
Some parents find that redefining the role of the breasts and human milk can be really powerful as a mindset shift when combo feeding or mixed feeding. Here are some affirmations you might try:
- My breasts are the ideal pacifier and comfort for my baby.
- Even small doses of my milk is very important, because it is medicine, a daily vitamin, a nutritional boost for my baby’s health.
- Each nursing session, even if brief, is my child’s earliest immunization.
That’s right! The health benefits of breastmilk are not “all or nothing”. Every drop of breastmilk benefits your baby. No matter the volume, there are immune properties present in human milk that cannot be replicated anywhere else. Your milk is truly amazing even in small amounts. The immune benefits alone make a huge difference to your baby!
Remember that you are the expert on your family, your baby, and your infant feeding journey. Your experiences are valid, and you are never alone. There are so many ways to breastfeed or feed human milk and to love your babies. You are doing a fantastic job. Your baby is so lucky to have you. Please know that there is endless support for you in LLL spaces, and we are here to cheer you on for every single feeding.
