Editor’s Note: The poems in this week’s blog post come from older issues of La Leche League News. The first issue of La Leche League News, the bimonthly publication for members, was published in 1958. The name changed to New Beginnings in 1985. New Beginnings continued to be published by La Leche League International until it was transferred to LLL USA in 2010. In 2014, it transitioned to its current blog format at www.lllusa.org/blog/.
Beginnings
By Joyce W. (1975)
Hello there, Stranger!
After all the months inside of me, I thought I’d know you…
But I don’t.
You were always there; I know how you kicked, how you turned.
But I didn’t know how you would feel in my arms.
My, you’re untidy…and funny looking… and small…
Hello there, Stranger!
You don’t seem to recognize me, either.
Couldn’t you open your eyes just a little bit?
Here I am…it’s me, your mother…
Funny, I don’t feel like a mother… not yet.
Hello there, Stranger!
Hey, you have all your fingers and toes!
Your nails are so tiny. I’ll never be able to cut them, ever.
How about a bite to eat? They say you’ll know what to do.
Will you really? You’re only thirty minutes old.
Hey, Little Stranger!
This way…open your mouth, Baby.
You do know what to do! What a strange sensation.
Did you like that? It’s very good for you, you know.
There are your eyes…how dark they are.
You’re looking right at me!
Oh, my, you’re beautiful!
Hello there, My Son!
To a Newborn Baby
By Helen P. (1965)
To hold you, softly sleeping,
So warm against my breast,
Is rich reward that keeps me
Both satisfied and blessed,
So long I waited for you,
Yet nothing could have told
How deeply you are cherished
How sweet you are to hold
MILK IS LOVE
By Nancy B.(1983)
This morning as my three-year-old nursling
kissed me several times he told me,
“I know what nummies are made of,
kisses.”
You know he is right.
Mother’s milk is made of love,
and he had just been refueled.
With Love from Dad and Mom

When one more is ADDED to the family +
Love is not SUBTRACTED from you. –
When we give love
It is not DIVIDED – ÷
It is MULTIPLIED. X
Love is not an EQUALIZER, =
Yet you cannot be GREATER THAN >
Or LESSER THAN. <
The qualities WHICH YOU ARE ( )
And for which you are loved.
This then you ADD to the family +
Which MULTIPLIES your being needed X
And wanted.
