Many families want to know the answer to this question: “How can I increase my pumping output?” We get it! For pumping parents, whether they are exclusively pumping or pumping while they are away from their baby, output is important.
The first thing to think about is: do you really need to increase your pumping output? Sometimes comparison within the pumping community can have us wondering why one may not seem to be producing as much breastmilk as one’s neighbor, sister, or friend. First, think about what is typical in regards to pumping output.
In I’m not pumping enough milk. What can I do?, Kelly Bonyata, IBCLC, explains: “It is typical for a mother who is breastfeeding full-time to be able to pump around 1/2 to 2 ounces total (for both breasts) per pumping session. Mothers who pump more milk per session may have an oversupply of milk, or may respond better than average to the pump, or may have been able to increase pump output with practice. Many mothers think that they should be able to pump 4-8 ounces per pumping session, but even 4 ounces is a rather large pumping output for a parent who is breastfeeding full-time.” You can read further in that article to learn more about what may be typical for your situation. It is important to highlight again from the above quote that parents who are pumping large amounts may very well have an oversupply of breastmilk and therefore are not an adequate point of comparison. You may be doing just fine!
If you do need to increase your pumping supply for any reason, don’t fret! La Leche League is here to help. Of course, we recommend reaching out to a La Leche League Leader in your area or online–you can find support in our Leader locator. We’ve also gathered some tips below from a recent LLL USA Facebook post that may feel helpful too.
Sometimes watching the bottles fill up can be stressful for pumping parents. Belle B. recounted what helped her make the most of each pumping session. “I never looked at my bottles or collection bags while I was pumping. Instead, I had an album of my favorite pictures and videos of my baby cooing or laughing. I would look at those pictures and videos for 10-15 minutes. This helped me achieve a letdown and complete my pumping session efficiently. You gotta get that oxytocin flowing for a good letdown!”
Rakel F. shared that being busy with a child is a typical part of her pumping routine. Sometimes being distracted can take your mind off of the number on the side of the bottles! “I never really think about watching the milk accumulating as I’m pumping. I’m too busy trying to keep a baby from crawling off the bed!”
You can read the rest of the comments in this Facebook thread.
Another tip that some parents have found helpful is to get immersed in music and relaxation. Try closing your eyes and listening to calming music. Alternatively, maybe you will find the best pumping output if you are dancing it out to your favorite song! You can also try covering the bottles with a nursing cover or baby socks so you are not fixated on the volume. Remember, your worth is not determined in ounces! Whatever you find to be the best output for your body and your baby’s milk needs, that is the right solution for you. Pumping parents and nursing parents, you are doing an amazing job!
