Poems from the Past: Part 2
Editor’s Note: The first issue of La Leche League News, a bimonthly LLLI newsletter for members, was published in 1958. The name was changed to New Beginnings in 1985. New Beginnings was acquired by La Leche League USA in 2010 and continued to be published as a magazine until 2014, when it was converted to its current weekly blog format at www.lllusa.org/blog/
You can read the previous “Poems from the Past: Part 1” here.
By Jody G. (1983)
Jordan, my beautiful, pink daughter.
How my heart has longed for you.
I’ve dreamed of holding you close to my cheek
and whispering long awaited secrets in your tiny ears.
I love you till my heart aches.
I have thought of you all my life.
I have planned tea parties for us a hundred times,
I have tied wild flowers in your hair in a thousand dreams.
But always, always as beautiful as you were then,
in a misty vision of what I wished would be never in all my dreams
were you as beautiful
as you are
here
nursing in my arms.
Newborn
By Norma B. (1975)
I am the cradle, my arms the shawl,
My breast the cup and a cushion
For a new monarch,
Born so incredibly rich –
But not as rich as I.
Oui
By William G. (1978)
Her face: fatted cheeks, determined; eyes focus…intent…unperturbed…single minded.
The mouth sucking, sucking; now pause…rest.
Tiny fists open…grope…fondle; methodically, a button…concerned, a bra strap… a blanket’s satin edge, soothed.
Begetting easy; no credit’s due. Reward comes in knowing the growing through you.
Wynne At One
By Nancy C. (1978)
Around the armchair,
Under the table;
I’d climb the bookshelf
If I were able.
I’m an explorer,
And I’m one year old today!
I took my shoes off
Because I’m big now.
You didn’t think i
Really knew how.
But i surprised you
‘Cause I’m one year old today!
If there’s a glass
You know i’ll spill it.
An empty diaper?
I’ll try to fill it.
I’m just happy
Being one year old today!
Here, kitty, kitty!
See? I’ve got food for you.
I’ve got it on the floor
And there’s some in my shoe.
I’m Mommy’s helper
‘Cause I’m one year old today!
I know my games are
Not discerning.
But please remember
My job is learning.
I just can’t help it
‘Cause I’m one year old today!
