Out Of The Mouths Of Nurslings: Sometimes Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Anita G., Texas
My daughter wasn’t really a chatty toddler, so often her actions spoke much louder than her words. When she was around 2 ½ years old, my husband worked out of town during the week and came home on the weekends. Harper hadn’t yet weaned, but we had reached the point where she was sometimes willing to let my husband take over the bedtime routine. She would snuggle with him while he read a story to her.
One night, they headed upstairs to get ready for bed. It was just a few minutes later when I heard tiny footsteps on the stairs, then Harper jumped up next to me on the couch. My husband followed shortly, with tears in his eyes from laughing. Apparently, Harper wasn’t in the mood for their story and snuggle. While he read, my daughter silently slipped away from his side, slid down the bed, and “army crawled” across the bedroom floor until she reached the door.
Once we all had a good laugh – even Harper seemed to see the humor – we had a few more snuggles and nursies, and then Harper was ready to sleep.
Has your child ever said something so clever, endearing, hilarious, or simply surprising that you couldn’t help but share it with those around you? Out of the Mouths of Nurslings gives parents of nurslings a place to share those words with readers around the United States and even the world. Send your anecdotes to Amy at [email protected].
