Recently, the La Leche League USA social media team asked Facebook followers who their biggest supporters have been on their breastfeeding journey. We thought we’d share a few of these messages of appreciation in today’s blog post. You can read all of the responses here. And, at the end of the post, you’ll find resources with more information on how to best support the breastfeeding individuals in your life.
Who have been your biggest breastfeeding supporters?
“My husband and, surprisingly, our six-year-old. When we brought his little brother home, (my older son) would do everything he could to help me out, even one time by trying to help me use my manual pump (which led to a very real discussion about boundaries).” – Vanessa M.
“The La Leche League book, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. I was alone but knew I wanted to nurse my son. My mother didn’t breastfeed. She said she was too embarrassed. I had to learn everything from your book. I nursed on the delivery table as soon as my son was born. It helped us bond.” – Susanne L.F.
“La Leche League, a lactation consultant, some of my friends, my husband, mom, and mother-in-law. They all support me in different ways.” – Alexandra A.
“My husband was my #1 supporter, but I was blessed to have two sisters-in-law who had babies within six months of my first. We all breastfed, so we were a mutual support system.” – Kathy J.
“(My) partner, sister, lactation counselor, La Leche League. All support me and help me in their own way. Very grateful.” – Tiphaine A.
“My husband most of all, my mom, my dad (to my surprise), my sister-in-law, and, of course, La Leche League.” – Aubrey M.
“La Leche League of Nantucket and Wareham (Massachusetts). And when my youngest was born, my older two were six and nine, and they were delighted to see how they had been fed. They loved that we could still go to the beach and on outings because breastmilk is always available.” – Nancy F.
“My parents! My mom thought I was crazy when I told her I planned on breastfeeding my first but has done nothing but support me and learn with me along the way.” – Jennifer H.
“My husband! When I had to pump at work, he would wash all the parts nearly every night.” – Carley N.
“Thirty-three years ago, when I was receiving a lot of negativity because I was pregnant with my fourth child, one of the nurses was my angel. I felt such genuine caring from her. She went on to become a breastfeeding consultant and helped many more moms. I didn’t need breastfeeding knowledge from her, since I was a La Leche League Leader and had already nursed three babies, but I truly treasured her celebration of my fourth son.” – Roberta B.
