Jaci McCaskell Kulish, Moorhead, Minnesota.
La Leche League of Fargo-Moorhead’s 2018 Live, Love, Latch! annual potluck picnic was held on August 1, 2018, the first day of National Breastfeeding Month, at a local park shelter. The day was forecast to be cloudy and cold with a high temperature topping out at 60 degrees. This happened with the two previous Live, Love, Latch! events held by La Leche League of Fargo-Moorhead. Less than ideal picnic weather!
The Live, Love, Latch! event was held at a local park under the picnic shelter. Guests brought dishes to share, and the Group supplied plates, flatware, napkins, and bottled water. Potlucks are a fun way to get a great variety, and this was no exception. From cookies to pumpkin bars to main dishes and sides to garden vegetables and take-out pizza, there was no shortage of delicious offerings.
Along with a potluck, the picnic also featured free face painting, free swag bags, a silent auction (hosted on the Group’s Facebook page), chalk and coloring stations, door prizes, Live, Love, Latch! selfie props, and free nursing bras and accessories from Leading Lady, one of this year’s sponsors of Live, Love, Latch! The silent auction was timed to finish at the end of the picnic, so many people hung around for the duration in hopes that they won the item(s) they were bidding on.
Several area businesses were cash sponsors of the picnic and were then allowed to set up a table and chat with attendees. Many sponsors also donated to the silent auction and included items to stuff in the swag bags. Other companies also donated silent auction items and items for swag bags.
Events like this are a great way to help spread the word about La Leche League, and gathering together allows people to show their support for breastfeeding/chestfeeding. It also is a great opportunity for the people who already support/are supported by the Group to meet other families or meet up with old LLL friends. The biggest surprise was when a Leader who moved out of the area showed up unexpectedly!
Even though the weather was not completely cooperative, 127 attendees turned out to celebrate breastfeeding/chestfeeding (22 more than last year’s attendance), 33 swag bags were handed out, nearly all of the nursing bras and accessories were given away, and many faces (and arms) were painted (some two and three times).
The successful fundraising effort of this picnic will help pay for Group expenses, continuing education, and community outreach, as well as go towards putting on an even bigger event next year!

Editor’s Note:Live, Love, Latch! events took place during National Breastfeeding Month, which was August 1-31. Live, Love, Latch! is a National Breastfeeding Month celebration presented by La Leche League USA and hosted by LLL Groups throughout the country.
