My La Leche League Story
By Mary Ann A.
Editor’s note: Recently, we received an email from a reader, Mary Ann, who wanted to share her experience with finding La Leche League meetings and becoming a Leader in 1973. We hope you enjoy her story.
Four years later, when I was expecting my first baby, I located an LLL Group support meeting near me. I was only three months pregnant at the time! As I was driving to the meeting, I debated, “Why am I going there?” I felt uneasy. I imagined there would only be strangers there. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the mothers at the meeting were most welcoming, and I loved that they really enjoyed their babies. One mother nursed in front of us, and I wondered why she didn’t go to another room. But soon, my perspective shifted. I told myself, “Hey, that is what we are here for.”
In the end, those Group members became very good friends of mine, and one of the meeting attendees even became the godmother of one of my three babies. I learned so much from them and still enjoy going to meetings. In 1973, I even became an LLL Leader myself. That one meeting changed my whole road to motherhood.
We’d love to hear how La Leche League has impacted you. Share your stories with Kylie at [email protected].
